Last night I actively chose to watch the president’s address to congress (aka, “Keeping up with the Trump-dashians.”) It was everything I worried it would be. Lies, lies and more lies. Comedic efforts. White privilege. White Supremacy and isolationism.
Watching the Republican side of the house rise time and time again, cheering the orange-faced man and his cringeworthy soundbites made me embarrassed to hold a US passport. It also made me happy to think about the UK and Canadian passports that sit in the same desk drawer.
How can these people be SO gleeful about rolling back efforts to save our environment, to restart coal /oil or to remove protections for minorities? How can they cheer the elimination of of the US’s soft power gained through foreign aid (step right up China and other countries). How can Elon Musk, an unelected official, receive several standing ovations for putting so many dedicated civil servants out of work.
I’d like to believe that a big correction will happen during the midterms but even then, we’re so fickle. We have such short memories. One can only take action and then hope.
Here’s a fact-check of Trump’s speech last night (from Jeff Bezos’ Washington Post): https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/03/05/fact-check-trump-speech-address-congress/
